Can I write a false name on a money order?

I'm sending someone I know over the internet (buying something off of them) a money order. I don't want this person to know my real name, but at the same time I'm afraid they might do a background check or something, no?

Thanks in advance! Can I write a false name on a money order?
It doesn't matter if you use a false name or not unless there comes a time when you need to get a refund for that money order (e.g. it gets lost) and have to show identification. Why would someone do a background check on you? Besides, if you are buying something, won't the person have your real address? If you are that worried, don't make purchases from people you don't know or feel you can't trust. Can I write a false name on a money order?
If you're worried about having your name on the money order, might I suggest using a cashier's check instead? I really doubt you have to worry about ';anti-terrorism laws'; and ';money laundering'; as those sorts of bank protocols deal with actual cash to start a paper trial of illegal monies.

How do you know they'll honor your payment?

They can't do a background check on you with only your name on a money order! If you're that paranoid don't shop online!

But it has become increasing more risky to sell or buy as the counterfeiters are using this as a place to set up unsuspecting individuals.

You can purchasea money order, send it to the seller and use any name you want to on the money order, but how will the seller know it is from you.

you sure can.you can put my name on it.:o)

Well depends do you want to actually receive your item or not. Sounds like you already don't trust this person. So if they should so choose to cash the money order and keep the item you couldn't do a thing about it. After all YOU didn't send the money order.

your sending someone a money order for something you bought, hmm now where his this person going to send it to? seeing you don't want him or her to know your name? ARE YOU A BLOND?

A person can't perform a background check without a SSN. You could also go to your bank and get a bank check. On the reference line instead of your name ask that they put a reference to a transaction number.

laundering, anti-trust laws? come on, you can always count on some wm to throw in the govn't scare tactic, it's $16, i don't think she's funding any terrorist groups gosh.

It its that deep send a cashiers check its just like cash, from a major bank of course, and you problem will be solved.

Yes a person can run a background check w/o a ssn, they may have to fish for you (if you have a common name) but they can find out easily.

Thats how i found guy I was dating was married, all I had then was a first name %26amp; city. out of 30 ppl w/ same name I found him.

Actually providing false information to a financial institution for a Monetary Instrument is a federal crime. FYI.

I work at a place that regularly receives U.S. Postal Money Orders, believe me you can put any name on them that you choose and they are still good and cashable.

why would you want to do that?

It's ok to send a money order with a different name you should be safe on line any way hope this helps Take care

Don't most money orders have you sign your name instead of just writing it? Just make the signature illegible...The only reason the other person would have to do a background check would be if the check didn't clear. Since it's a money order you should have nothing to worry about.
Send me the cash and I'll write my name on it.
You'll be running afoul of money laundering and anti-terrorism laws by doing so. Proceed at your own risk.
If this person doesn't know your real name then I think you should ask someone at the post office about this just in case you are planning to insure the item.

If you insure the item and something happens to it and you use a false name you may have trouble collecting the insurance on that item and I would always insure the item just in case or you could be out all the money that you have invested.

Is there a reason for not wanting this person to know your name?

I really don't think that person will do any kind of a background check on you and why would that person do it anyway? If you haven't done anything to that person then why worry so much about it, just send the money order but talk to the post office employee first about using a false name, okay.

Good luck.
