Why did Odysseus give a false name to the Cyclops?

In the Odyssey, why would Odysseus give the Cyclops a false name, ';Nobody';? Thank you.Why did Odysseus give a false name to the Cyclops?
Odesseus gave the cyclops a false name, nobody so that when Odysseus attacked the giant, he wouldn't be able to call for help, since NOBODY would be attacking him. The other cyclops would have just assumed it was a joke. Why did Odysseus give a false name to the Cyclops?
Because when somebody asked him the cyclops would say ';No man did this to me!'; and there would be no fuss. But Sadly odysseus gets full of himself and tells the cyclops his name which plunges him into his difficult quest.
So, when polyphemus [the cyclops] called his borthers for help, they would assume that it was all just a joke, that ';nobody'; was there, thus ensuring their escape.
So that when the cyclops yelled for help he would say, ';Nobody is here!'; And his brothers and sisters would not come to help him, because nobody is there.
To trick him! That way when the others came to see what was wrong, there would be 'nobody' there, thus no cause for alarm.
