Is it illegal to use a false name/ lie about credentials on the Internet?

It is only illegal if you are using a false identity to commit fraud. Using a false name/identity in chat rooms, blogs, or other forums is perfectly legal - although it could be seen as unethical depending on the content and the situation. Is it illegal to use a false name/ lie about credentials on the Internet?
No, but if you do if for personal gain, then you can get in trouble.
