Is there a punishment for crank callers using private info and false names?

my friend was crank called by two girls from our school who claimed to be working on the Board of Education. they said she had failed an exam that could not be made up, though she had been told she had passed. she hung up very upset, and her mother called the school angry and left a message. However, a so-called friend of the callers called my friend back to which her mother answered, and told her mother her friend had crankcalled them. when the mother asked for names and parents numbers, there were fALSe names and numbers given. the callers knew my friend's full name and number which confuses her. is this a crime? and if so, is it worse than regular crank calling? Is there a punishment for crank callers using private info and false names?
Depending on how far the mother wants to take this, the phone records can be subpoenaed, and they will be able to identify the phone where the call came from. The rest should be easy.
